Things I'm Loving - May 2019

What is a good blog without the ability to inspire its readers? My favorite bloggers or influencers are the ones that have great style of course and an entertaining albeit endearing personality—no doubt. But they’re also the ones who are constantly sharing their favorite finds so I can shamelessly run to purchase the exact pair of pants or all-natural deodorant that they have. Obviously.

SO—in an attempt to put my own spin on the tried and true tactic of plugging the good stuff, I’m introducing a new monthly series where I share the things I’m currently obsessing over. I’ve been exploring a lot of new trends, topics, and products as of late so if you’re in the mood to try something new—here goes!

  1. All things home decor.

Oh boy. So as you may know, I recently moved into a new house and I’m on decorating overdrive. I’m revamping my style a bit now that Bobby and I live together too, so gone are the days of high heel paintings hanging in my living room and sheepskin rugs in every room. The glitz and glamour style I loved in my early twenties while I was living alone was absolutely marvelous, but now I’ve moved on to a new look: mid-century modern with a sprinkle of bohemian flair!

I’m talking textured fabrics, warm colors, minimalist vibes; patterned rugs lining my floors with green plants everywhere. I’m obsesssssed with Wayfair lately since they’re so affordable and easy to work with. I recently ordered a headboard and it arrived with a small snag, and after a few simple clicks they sent me a brand new one at no cost and I didn’t even have to send the old back. Incredible!

2. Building a capsule wardrobe - status: in progress.

One of my goals for 2019 was to have, do, and be less. The biggest area of focus? My closet. I used to be the girl who dreamt of having the biggest closet—Carrie Bradshaw style—and wanted exactly 1 million pairs of shoes, give or take a few hundred. Seriously.

Now, I’ve become really obsessed with the idea of having a capsule wardrobe, which is essentially a collection of 20 or so things that are really high-quality basics that you wear all the time. They’re durable, stylish, and dependable. Classy and cool, all in one simple white tee.

I’ve honestly been doing quite a bit of shopping lately (oops) in an attempt to clean out the things I have that are no longer bringing me joy, cue Marie Kondo. It may seem a little bit backwards, but hey—if buying a new shirt and pair of pants inspires me to purge 15 things that I haven’t worn in years, I’m here for it. It’s been really fun to watch my style evolve as I get older too, and as of late, I’m really into wide-leg cropped pants, statement earrings, and my Gucci knockoff loafers (thank you, Target).

3. Crime Junkie Podcast

I love a new podcast addiction, and last month I discovered Crime Junkie and I am now a true crime junkie like the podcast claims. The host, Ashley Flowers, is a master storyteller. Each episode, she sets the scene for some kind of mysterious crime and for 45 glorious minutes she walks you through every moment in painstakingly specific details. Her co-host Brit is a great sounding board and it’s a super interesting and highly addictive listen.

I will warn you though: as soon as I knew I was hooked, I started bingeing the entire series. Low and behold, one week into listening to these true crime stories and I found myself PARANOID at my house, thinking a murderer would come inside and snatch me at any second. I then had to start pacing myself, listening to one or two episodes a week at max so I wouldn’t get too scared. It’s like Ashley always says, “You can’t trust anyone ever.” I’m looking at you, Bobby…… (lol, just kidding)

4. Walking over lunch breaks

On the days where it hasn’t been raining every second of daylight, it’s actually been really nice here in Iowa. Warm and breezy, even! On those beautiful days where the sun is shining and the birds are chirping, I’ve been taking walks over my lunch break. It’s been so energizing to get outside in the middle of the workday, breathing in the fresh air and moving my body. My office has a nice neighborhood nearby, but I also look forward to walking Sophie on the days I go home for lunch! According to my Apple Watch, I can walk a mile in 15ish minutes which is the perfect post-lunch activity. Highly suggest!

5. Intermittent Fasting

Okay, so I know this isn’t a new topic anymore but I finally committed to actually doing this fasting thing and so far I am loving! If you haven’t heard of intermittent fasting, it’s when you fast for 16 hours of your day so that you only eat for 8 hours. I’m currently eating between the hours of 11am to 7pm ONLY - so my first meal of the day is at 11 and I’m done with dinner (and dessert, obviously) by 7pm.

The 7pm part isn’t all that difficult for me because I usually don’t eat dinner all that late, but I am an AVID breakfast eater so the mornings have definitely been a challenge. The only thing I have before 11am is coffee, and I drink it black. I’ll try to incorporate a snack after lunch but so far, I feel really good! I’m eating less and I feel more energized! I’m not doing it to lose weight necessarily, but that is often a major plus to the lifestyle! It has a wide range of other health-related benefits too, such as cell repair and keeping your insulin levels down. Fun stuff! If you’re in the market for a new health craze, I am officially on the IF bandwagon and highly suggest it!
